Book is in Near Fine condition with slight soiling to covers and spine. Inside is clean an as new with interesting illustrations throughout. In April 1867 Julia Newell of Janesville, WI responded to a notice which appeared in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and other New York newspapers promoting an excursion to Paris and points beyond on the ocean steamship Quaker City. There were approximately seventy other passengers on board, including Mark Twain, who was age thirty-two at the time.This is a collection of the fourteen letters Newell wrote to The Janesville Gazette, dated from June 23 to December14. Twain's own impressions of the trip were published in fifty-three letters to papers in San Francisco and New York City and later in book form as The Innocents Abroad.
